Expectations in Reception

Our curriculum

Maths and English – Follows the EYFS curriculum and includes targets such as:

Rhyming and rhythmic activities, listening to and joining in with stories, recall, letter recognition and formation, writing own name and eventually simple sentences.

Recognising and using numbers, counting, comparing, representing numbers in different ways, estimation, more and less than, shapes.

Phonics - is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. It runs alongside other teaching methods such as Guided Reading and Shared Reading. It teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify the phonemes that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words.

Theme – All about me (Autumn 1) Celebrations (Autumn 2) What is a home? (Spring 1) What makes a superhero? (Spring 2) How does my garden grow? (Summer 1) What can I do at the seaside? (Summer 2)

Science – will run alongside Theme topics and incorporate the EYFS outcomes that link with science.

RE – I am special / Harvest (Autumn) Stories Jesus heard and told / Easter (Spring) Special people / places / times (Summer)

Art – Sketching (A) Colour (Sp) 3-D media / modern art (Su)

Our routine

 Morning work

When the children enter class they complete ‘morning work’. This entails them writing their name on a pre-prepared laminated ‘postcard.’ This is independent practice and not guided work and the children are expected to do the best that they can. This activity is used to establish routine at the start of the day.

Friday Fiction

The opportunity for you to share a story with your child.

You are welcome to enter the classroom with your child and read a story with them until the bell rings for the children to start their day in school.

Star moments

There will be an opportunity for you to fill in some star moments during Friday fiction.

Please feel free to email photographs to the office for us to print out for you.

We promote independence for all of our children and so we would like to add here that we would like to see children walking in and out of the classroom and that they are not to be carried in.

Current research is proving that when young children use dummies it can have damaging, lasting effects on their speech and language, as well as damage to the growth and formation of their teeth. We therefore encourage parents to be sending dummies off to the 'Dummy Fairy' if they have not already =)
